OUR STORY

Welcome to Little Paws Schnauzers – Where Passion Meets Pedigree!

We are the Little Paws family, proud breeders of Schnauzers since 2018. Our journey began with a deep appreciation for this intelligent, loyal, and playful breed, and we are dedicated to helping individuals find their new furry family member.

Having cultivated a profound understanding of Schnauzers over the years, we are passionate about guiding those interested in welcoming these affectionate and versatile companions into their homes. Our love for Schnauzers started with our beloved companion, Rex, whose presence was a constant joy during our upbringing. When Rex passed at the age of 12, it left a void that only a Schnauzer could fill. In a heartwarming gesture, our family surprised us with Max, another delightful Schnauzer, during a special occasion. Max became not only our loyal friend but also introduced us to the wonderful world of Schnauzers.

United by our love for these remarkable dogs, my spouse and I decided to extend our passion into breeding. Today, we raise Schnauzers with the utmost care and attention to detail. Our spacious, fenced yard ensures the safety of our puppies, and although Schnauzers enjoy outdoor adventures, we also ensure they are well-socialized and adaptable to various living environments. Weekends are often spent in the great outdoors, creating cherished moments with our playful pups.

As registered Schnauzer breeders, we are proud to have facilitated over 80 families in adopting these loving and loyal companions. Our dedication is rooted in years of personal experience with Schnauzers, ensuring that every puppy finds its perfect home. Join us in the journey of discovering your ideal puppy, where love, expertise, and commitment converge at Little Paws Schnauzers.

OUR FACILITIES

Additionally, our puppies enjoy a beautiful fenced-in yard where they can explore, play with our older dogs, and practice potty training outside.

TRAINING TIPS

Training Tips for Schnauzers

Training your Schnauzer should begin immediately. This is not only important for shaping their behavior but also for establishing a strong relationship between you and your puppy. Schnauzers are intelligent, independent, and highly trainable, but they thrive under firm, consistent guidance.

Many first-time puppy owners focus on buying the right accessories, treats, or a bed, but they forget to focus on how or what they will teach their puppy. While these things are important, one of the most crucial aspects of a Schnauzer’s development is establishing yourself as a strong, confident pack leader. Puppies, including Schnauzers, have an innate need for structure, leadership, and clear boundaries.

Becoming Your Schnauzer’s Pack Leader

A Schnauzer puppy is hard-wired to follow a pack leader. To avoid undesirable behaviors like excessive barking, chewing, leash-pulling, or anxiety, it is vital to establish yourself as the pack leader early on. A strong, consistent pack leader is firm yet kind, and most importantly, stable. Schnauzers tend to respond well to positive reinforcement and clear commands, so consistency is key in training.

  • Consistency: Set clear expectations from day one. Always use the same commands and reward good behavior with praise or treats.
  • Stability: Schnauzers are sensitive to changes in their environment or routine. Try to keep their daily schedule as consistent as possible, including feeding times, potty breaks, and training sessions.
  • Positive Reinforcement: Schnauzers respond best to positive reinforcement. Reward them immediately after they perform the desired behavior, whether with praise, treats, or toys. This helps them understand exactly what they are being rewarded for.

Basic Training for Schnauzers

  1. Sit, Stay, and Come: These basic commands are essential for building a strong foundation. Start with “sit” to get their attention, then move on to “stay” and “come.” Schnauzers are eager to please, so they often pick up these commands quickly.
  2. Leash Training: Schnauzers are energetic, so leash training is vital. Start by getting your puppy used to wearing a leash and harness. Once they’re comfortable, start practicing walking on the leash, ensuring they don’t pull or tug. Always walk ahead of your Schnauzer to establish leadership.
  3. Crate Training: Crate training is an excellent way to help your Schnauzer develop good habits and feel secure when left alone. It’s important that the crate becomes a positive space, not a punishment.

Housebreaking Tips for Schnauzers

Schnauzers are quick learners when it comes to housebreaking, especially between the ages of two to four months. It’s important to remember that housebreaking requires patience and consistency. Here’s how to set your Schnauzer up for success:

  • Routine: Take your puppy outside frequently—after waking up, after meals, and every 1-2 hours during the day. Schnauzers are intelligent, and once they understand the routine, they’ll begin to associate certain actions (like eating or waking up) with going outside.
  • Designated Spot: Always take your Schnauzer to the same spot outside. The familiar scent will encourage them to eliminate in the same area.
  • Praise: When your Schnauzer does their business outside, give them plenty of praise. Positive reinforcement will help reinforce the behavior you want.
  • Avoid Punishment: If your Schnauzer has an accident inside, stay calm and avoid punishment. Puppies can’t associate punishment with accidents. Instead, clean the mess thoroughly and calmly redirect your puppy to the appropriate spot next time.

Exercise and Health for Schnauzers

Schnauzers are an active, playful breed that requires regular exercise to stay healthy and happy. As their pack leader, it’s your job to ensure they get the right amount of exercise and playtime to burn off excess energy.

  • Daily Walks: Schnauzers love daily walks, and they need them to stay fit. Aim for at least 30 to 45 minutes of walking each day. Walking not only helps with physical fitness but also reinforces your role as the leader.
  • Playtime: In addition to walks, Schnauzers enjoy playtime in a safe, enclosed space. Fetch, tug-of-war, and other interactive games are great ways to engage their minds and bodies.
  • Mental Stimulation: Schnauzers are highly intelligent dogs, so mental stimulation is equally important. Puzzle toys, training sessions, and obedience work can help keep their minds sharp and prevent boredom.
  • Avoid Over-exercising: While Schnauzers are energetic, it’s important not to over-exercise young puppies, as their bones and joints are still developing. Consult with your vet about the ideal exercise regimen for your puppy’s age and health.

Veterinary Care for Schnauzers

Routine veterinary visits are essential to ensure your Schnauzer stays healthy. Regular check-ups help catch any potential issues early and ensure your puppy’s vaccinations, flea/tick preventatives, and deworming treatments are up-to-date.

  • Vaccinations: Ensure that your Schnauzer receives their puppy vaccines, including rabies, distemper, parvovirus, and leptospirosis, as recommended by your veterinarian.
  • Diet and Nutrition: Provide a high-quality, well-balanced diet appropriate for your Schnauzer’s age, size, and activity level. Consult your vet for recommendations on food that will support their health and development.
  • Preventative Care: Regular dental check-ups, flea and tick prevention, and heartworm treatments are essential for keeping your Schnauzer healthy. Don’t forget regular grooming sessions, as Schnauzers can have a long, wiry coat that requires care to prevent matting and tangling.
  • Spaying/Neutering: If you plan to spay or neuter your Schnauzer, discuss the best time to do so with your vet, as it can affect their long-term health.

Conclusion

Training, exercise, and health care are the cornerstones of raising a well-behaved, happy Schnauzer. By becoming a confident pack leader and establishing a consistent routine, you can ensure your Schnauzer grows into a well-adjusted, loyal companion. With the right training, socialization, and care, your Schnauzer will thrive and be a loving member of your family for many years to come.
